Cottonwood Day School

Our school prioritizes the health and well-being of students by fostering a safe and healthy environment.

Student Illness Procedures

Students who are ill or have a contagious condition must remain at home. If a student becomes unwell during the school day, they will be sent to the front office. An administrator will contact the parent or guardian to arrange for the student to be picked up promptly.

Medication Administration

Medications, including both prescription and over-the-counter drugs, are administered in accordance with the Bureau of Indian Education (BIE) Medication Administration Policy. Parents or guardians must provide written permission and follow the policy’s procedures for medication administration at school.

Medical Emergencies

In the event of a medical emergency requiring urgent attention, the school will immediately transport the student to the nearest health facility or hospital. Parents or guardians will be notified as soon as possible, and school staff will remain with the student until the family arrives.

Infectious Disease Control Policy

The school adheres to guidelines developed in collaboration with the Navajo District and Indian Health Services to limit the spread of communicable diseases.

  • Response Steps:
    • If a communicable or infectious disease is suspected, staff will notify the principal or designee.
    • The student may be transported to the nearest hospital (Indian Health Services or private) for evaluation.
    • Parents or guardians will be contacted immediately.
    • If isolation is required, the student will be placed in a designated room under supervision and monitored every 10 minutes.
    • Measures to control disease transmission will be implemented in school facilities and dormitories (if applicable).
  • Parental Notification:
If a student has been exposed to a communicable disease, the school will notify parents or guardians in writing with:
    • Details of the disease and whether it is an isolated case or part of an outbreak.
    • Signs and symptoms to monitor.
    • Information on disease transmission, incubation period and communicability duration.
    • Recommended prevention measures from public health officials.
    • Control measures implemented by the school.

Re-Admittance to School

If a student has been removed due to a communicable or infectious disease, they must provide a doctor’s statement confirming they are medically cleared to return. In some cases, a meeting with the parent or guardian may be required before the student can rejoin classes.

For questions or assistance, please contact the school’s front office at 435-651-3271.
